Description

This beautiful coffee is from the mystic Tana Toraja region in South Sulawesi, an area which is known to produce some of the cleanest and best tasting coffee in Indonesia. Toarco Jaya is a joint venture between Sulawesi Development Corporation and Key Coffee Inc Japan. The business was established in 1976 and the goal to revive and promote excellent coffees from the Toraja district in Sulawesi.

The company owns the Pedamaran Plantation at 900–1250 meters, and purchases wet-parchment from small producers at 1200–1800 meters. Toarco’s presence in the region has also led to an increase in transparency and opportunity for the growers throughout Toraja. Not only do they pay stable and reliable quality-based premiums for the coffees they buy, Toarco also publishes the rates they are paying on a weekly basis to help prevent exploitation by collectors. Growers can sell coffees to Toarco at remote purchasing points close to the growing areas (eliminating the need to travel to town) or deliver to the buying station in Rantepao where coffees are graded, roasted, and cupped on the spot and farmers get immediate feedback about the quality of their coffees. The company also introduced the washed process to the area back when they started, as opposed to adopting the traditional Giling Basah (wet-hulled) method that is commonly employed in Indonesia.

Toarco Jaya coffee is highly celebrated by specialty roasters around the world and highly prized in Japan.
