The Mierisch family has been farming coffee in Nicaragua for over 100 years. As a family-run operation, they have produced high quality shade-grown coffee. These days, they have 11 coffee farms in Nicaragua, and 3 coffee farms in Honduras.
In Nicaragua, the farms are located in the Matagalpa and Jinotega departments. Matagalpa is home to 8 farms, including Los Placeres, whereas Jinotega, a little bit farther north-west, is home to 3. Each farm has a unique micro-climate and soil composition, which makes their management, and coffee quality, truly distinct from one another.
JavaNica is actually the Java variety produced within Nicaragua. The variety came to prominence when Don Esteban Mierisch ‘saved’ a bunch of coffees seeds that were about to be discarded in 2001. Whilst an often high quality variety, Java’s susceptibility to diseases made it less and less easily available in the specialty market today. With the Mierisch Family’s effort, they became Nicaragua’s largest producer of this variety today, and the coffee is much sought after for its floral, complex cup profile.
