Description

In recent years, Honduras has emerged as one of world’s the most important coffee origins. In 2011, Honduras surpassed Guatemala to become the largest coffee producer in Central America, and is now 7th largest in the world. The coffee world has taken notice of the excellent quality found in Honduras as well.

This coffee comes from a renowned coffee mill (beneficio), San Vicente, in West Honduras. Whilst traditionally this mill supplies high quality coffee from smallholder farms that are too small to separate into lots, in recent years single farmer “microlots” have started to gain popularity, especially along with events such as the Cup of Excellence competition began showcasing coffees from the aldeas (villages) around Peña Blanca – such as El Cielito, El Cedral and Las Flores.

The varietal of this coffee should also be of interest. Parainema is a hybrid variety that is resistant to rust and nematode infestations. This variety began in 1981 as part of a series of experiments to address producers issues with disease and pests and was known as Sarchimor T-5269. First plantings were in Costa Rica from 2006 – 2008, and it was introduced to Honduras in 2010 as “Parainema”.
